Don’t play with me in these professional streets! Code-switching is something that I learned very early in academia and professional spaces for survivalhood as a First Gen Latina from South Central, LA. As I continue to uncover the generational gifts from my family, community, and my ancestors, I’m continuously learning to show up authentically and bravely in all spaces.

Mi gente, while many of us have mastered code-switching for survival, gentle reminder to not compromise your values and identity. It’s okay to shift and realign. Go where you’re celebrated, not tolerated. 🧡

This is your reminder mi gente that your worth is not defined by what’s on paper. 💛

We see our parents pain, exhaustion, frustration, hopelessness, restlessness, worries, and exploitation. We want their sacrifices to be ‘worth it.” So que hacemos? We emotionally blackmail ourselves to push our limits to the point we are statistically anomaly successful because somehow that signifies that “we made it.” ❤️‍🩹

Consequently, this leads to not knowing how to give ourselves grace or permission to rest, it leads to perfectionism, unable to celebrate small wins or wins at all because we want to jump to the next ‘big thing.’

As children of immigrants, may we uncover our worth outside of ‘what’s on paper.’ We are continuously learning, unlearning, and relearning. ✨

Un abrazo bien fuerte a toda mi gente who feels seen by this post. This was for you, for me, for us. Somos First Gen’s. Somos hijxs de inmigrantes. 🧡

#UnderstoodPartner Mi gente, did you know that Latine parents may have more barriers when it comes to recognizing ADHD symptoms in their children?

To increase access to resources and awareness on the barriers Latine parents face when it comes to supporting their children’s mental health, specifically ADHD diagnosis and treatment, I’m collaborating with @understoodorg , a non profit organization the centers their work with supporting families better understand their child’s learning and thinking differences. More importantly, mi gente, these resources are also available in Spanish!

To access free resources in English and Spanish including articles, podcasts, and community groups, visit understood.org or click the link in bio.

Dear First Gen’s/children of immigrants, choosing yourself does not mean we don’t appreciate or acknowledge our parents’ sacrifices.

Whether it’s the type of career choice you make, who you choose to love, where you choose to live, when you decide to do what you want to do… remember that honoring yourself does not make you an ungrateful child. Many of our parents immigrated to new homelands in order for us to uncover our own gifts and live life authentically. ❤️

Anytime juxtaposing feelings come up for me about “feeling ungrateful if I don’t follow my parents’ hopes and dreams for me,” I gently reframe my thoughts and remind myself that I deserve to live my life authentically while holding space and so much love for my amá y apá ❤️

As children of immigrants, we are consistently learning, unlearning, and relearning and that’s okay. 🥰💕

Con mucho cariño,

One week left of school! Fellow educators, school social workers, school psychologists, school counselors… how are y’all holding up? 😬

Typically towards the end of the school year it is when we see an increase of crises, behavior difficulties, students dysregulated especially seniors as they’re transitioning to adulthood, while we’re wrapping up reports, documentation, and everything in between. 🥲

Enjoy Summer! ☀️

Mental Health Awareness Month is almost over but we are continuously en la lucha to destigmatize mental health/illness in the Latine community. 💚

Facts about mental health is the Latine community
▪️60 million Latine living in the U.S.
▪️Nearly 22% have a mental illness
▪️Only 10% contact a health professional about their mental health 🤯

Barriers to accessing mental health support and services include:
▪️stigma (silence & shame)
▪️language
▪️representation of Latine health providers
▪️legal status
▪️lack of health insurance
▪️misdiagnosis

There are multiple avenues for healing. One way is therapy. One of my favorite resource that I share often with friends, family, and community is the @latinxtherapy directory. Here you can find therapists who the majority are bilingual and can connect with you culturally. You can filter your search based on location, speciality, LGBTQIA+ identity, migration status, insurance type, etc. I actually found my mom’s therapist on the directory! 💕 And I’m also part of the directory and currently accepting clients.😊

Querida mamás inmigrantes… 📝

For those celebrating Mother’s Day today, feliz día de las mamis. I penned this letter to all the mamis especially nuestras madres inmigrantes 💕

Sending un abrazo fuerte to those grieving a mother, to those unable to see their mother, to those who don’t have a relationship with their mother, to those who have an emotionally absent mother, to those who are navigating difficulties in motherhood, to new mothers, to those having to step into roles of motherhood, and to all mothers who are simply trying to figure it out as they go.

Les mando mucha luz en este día ✨🤍💐

Mi gente, this week I had the honor of speaking at the Women of Color Empowerment Group event at San Diego State University. 🩷 @sdsuhsi

I had the opportunity to engage in a plática with the amazing @drhortenciajimenez about intergenerational healing through intersections of mental health, body image, and diet culture. I unapologetically invited all my identities into this sacred space because for so long, these identities carried shame. I am a proud First Generation Latina who is the eldest daughter of undocumented immigrants, who calls South Central LA home. As we discussed the intersects of cultura with intergenerational trauma and diet culture, my inner niña felt seen as I was often teased and bullied by my tíos former being a child in a bigger body and questioned how I was going to look in my quinceañera dress if I didn’t lose weight.

We discussed the emotional, mental, social, and biological impact of intergenerational trauma on BIPOC communities. We called out oppressive systems that perpetuate Eurocentric ideology. We called in our ancestral wisdom and gifts that invite us to lean into intergenerational healing. We leaned into our comunidad as strength y honestamente, Que chingon me sentí being surrounded by resilient powerful women.

And shoutout to my hubby for cheering me on. He sees a lot of the work I do behind the scenes but this time he had front row seats. 💕

I dedicate this keynote to my papí, my viejito who cleans the offices of a CEO in a produce company and even though he has an honest hardworking job, su hija también es una CEO y un día lo vamos a retirar 🥹.

May we unapologetically take up space anywhere we go, lean into intergenerational healing, and honor our ancestral gifts. Cargamos cultura, resiliencia, y fortaleza en la frente. 🌵

As a First Gen Latina professional, who lived most of her young adult years with her parents, I feared the licuadora going off or the sound of the paletero during my meetings. I recall feeling so anxious before my virtual meetings because I didn’t want to look “unprofessional.” I had to consistently tell my mom, “Ama, no vaya a moler nada en la próxima hora.” And then she would hit me the “ay sorry mija se me olvido.” 🫠 Anybody else relate? 😩

The cultural negotiations we have to do as First Gens often include navigating working from home in a multi-generational home. Sometimes it’s not as easy as just telling our parents or family members to ‘keep it down’ for the next hour. It may require more than this simple explanation. Often, our parents or family members who have never navigated educational or professional spaces have a hard time understanding why we need a quiet space for a given time or the nuances of meeting virtually. Perhaps a level of understanding might have increase as a result of COVID, but still not quite.

If you’re a student or ‘professional’ working from home en una esquinita de tu casa and residing with your parents or family, please compassionately remind yourself that you’re doing the best that you can with the resources you have. Maybe you decide to plan for alternative ways to show up virtually but maybe it’s out of your capacity or control. If this is the case, take a long deep breath, remind yourself that you are capable regardless of your current home/environmental circumstance. 💚

Abrazos fuertes,
Dra. Hernández @palantetherapy ✨
